For the past five years, The Morris Foundation has awarded the Lewis Sexton Scholarship, named in honor of my grandfather, to public school students in the commonwealth of Kentucky who plan to attend college in Kentucky. My grandfather, Lewis Sexton, was an autoworker and a career-long union member. He served at numerous positions within the leadership of the UAW 862, and upon his retirement, was selected to be its president. In honor of my grandfather, his contributions to working people in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and more personally to my care and upbringing, the Morris Foundation dedicated three scholarships to Kentucky high school students in his name. The Lewis Sexton Fund was established in 2016 by the Morris Foundation. The scholarship provides three non-renewable awards of $5,000 each to children (or legal wards) of UAW 862 member or retirees who plan to attend college in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Students must be graduating high school seniors who have a cumulative high school GPA of 3.5 or higher. The award is paid directly to the recipient's college/university over the course of 2 semesters. It is my hope that this scholarship will make college more affordable, and the American Dream more accessible to a few exceptional Kentucky students, just like my grandfather did for me.
