Today we celebrate the birth and life of the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a man who stood for the highest principles of humanity and who fought for civil rights, recognizing the struggles of so many.
Dr. King was taken from us too soon, assassinated just one day after giving a speech in support of striking sanitation workers in Memphis, where he touched on the possibility of living a too-short life, saying, "I've been to the mountaintop. … And I've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land."
Today, as in his day, we struggle against forces of hate and injustice, and we fight for those less fortunate among us to be recognized and heard.
Dr. King also said, "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."
As we live through these unprecedented times, let us remember that we must counter darkness with light and hate with love. Let us not forget the greatness of Dr. King, his words, his example, and his message. Let us not despair of a brighter future, because together we can do great things.
